I never had such a problem.
If i do a

  ldconfig -v | grep libstdc++

i get

       libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 -> libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2
       libstdc++.so.2.7.2 -> libstdc++.so.2.7.2
       libstdc++.so.2.9 -> libstdc++.so.2.9
       libstdc++.so.2.8 -> libstdc++.so.2.8
       libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 -> libstdc++-3-libc6.2-2-2.10.0.so
       libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 -> libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so

Probably you should install the g++ rpm as well, this contains
the stdc++ stuff (it is on my Linux listed in
rpm -qli compat-2002.3.23-1)
