I will try to get the C++ into the autoconf soon.

The old Makefile's will be overwritten by 'configure'.  When we commit the new
stuff to the tree we probably want to preserve the original Makefile's for a
while.  I suggest we move them to Makefile.orig until we are statisfied that
the gnu autoconf is working perfectly.  After that we can cvs remove them.
